Men's Basketball Signs Local Standout

DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team signed highly-touted local product Alex Cotton to a National Letter of Intent Thursday.
Cotton, who is a senior at Hebron High School in Carrollton, was District 6-6A Offensive Player of the Year and first team all-league last season after averaging nearly 20 points per game to go along with six rebounds per contest and over 100 made 3-pointers.
He signs with a UNT squad that has won a Conference USA trophy in each of the last three seasons and is coming off a historic year where they won a program-record 25 games and 16 league games and owned the nation's top scoring defense.
The 6-foot-5 guard is regarded as one of the top 40 shooting guards in the nation by 247Sports. He's an elite athlete with size and length that allows him to fit both the defensive identity of UNT and be a scoring threat at the rim and as a shooter. Cotton is able to use his size to distribute from the guard position and also rebound well.
Cotton was voted all-district after his sophomore year as well.
He played on the Nike EYBAL circuit with Drive Nation
In addition to UNT, he held offers from New Mexico, Oral Roberts, Missouri State and Troy.
The Mean Green defeated Southern Nazarene on Monday in the season opener, 53-47. They next travel to Saint Mary's on Sunday for a 7 p.m. CT scheduled tip. The game will be streamed on WCC Network and the Mean Green Network presented by Learfield.
