Mean Green win third straight season opener
DENTON, Texas – Junior Tommisha Lampkin had a career day with 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to a 71-58 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana in the season opener Thursday night inside the Super Pit.
Lampkin, who registered a double-double before halftime, went 8 for 11 from the floor and set a new career-high in both points and rebounds for the second double-double of her career.
Newcomers Jaaucklyn Moore and Breanna Davis also scored in double figures as Moore finished with 13 and Davis added 10 in their debuts in a UNT uniform.
As a team, UNT held the Eagles to 28.9 percent shooting from the floor and just 18.2 percent from 3-point range as they swelled the lead to 16 by halftime and held on for the 13-point victory.
The Mean Green have now won each of their last three season openers and five of their last six dating back to the 2017-18 season.
UNT came out of the gates hot, scoring six of the first eight points of the game and leading by as many as 10 in the first quarter after Davis knocked down a pair of free throws.
The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to five early in the second quarter, but the Mean Green responded by closing the first half on an 18-7 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Kendall McGruder to take a 16-point edge into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, Moore rattled off three straight points to grow the lead to as many as 19 at 45-26, the largest lead of the contest for the Mean Green.
Trailing 66-47 early in the fourth, Texas A&M-Texarkana was nearly able to cut the deficit back to single digits with an 8-0 run. They could not get and closer, however, as Davis and Maddie Cleary sank five straight free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Cleary finished the game with eight points as did senior Quincy Noble who was tied with Moore for the second-most boards in the game.
Along with Moore and Davis, Ereauna Hardaway, Jordyn Carter, Jasmyne Boles and Courtlyn Loudermill all made their UNT debuts in the contest.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"It was a good win. An ugly win, but a win to start the season is always what you want to do. We have to continue to work as a team on execution on both ends of the floor. Obviously Misha led the way tonight, as she should have with our size advantage, going 8 for 11 from the floor, and I was pleased with the way she performed."
