Women’s Basketball Inks Two for 2023 Class

UNT welcomes Shadasia Brackens and McKenzie Smith to roster for 2023-24
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team signed a pair of strong prospects to its 2023 recruiting class Thursday as Shadasia Brackens and McKenzie Smith both signed their National Letters of Intent.
Brackens, a standout at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Texas, was the first to ink with the Mean Green.
In three seasons at Fairfield, Brackens has helped lead the Eagles to two Texas high school state championships, including winning the 2021-22 title. In fact, Brackens has appeared in the 3A State Championship game in each of her first three years of high school.
An All-State selection in basketball in 21-22, Brackens is a one of the top defensive players in the state, earning District 20-3A Defensive Player of the Year honors in her junior campaign. She is #33 on the Premier Basketball Report 2023 Top-100 players in the state of Texas.
Brackens is also a standout in track and field, winning the Class 3A state title in the high jump her junior season with an impressive jump of 5 foot 10 inches.
Smith, meanwhile, signed on the dotted line Thursday as well, giving UNT two standout athletes as a part of the 2023 class.
Out of Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas, Smith led the Lady Sandies to a 32-5 record and an appearance in the Class 5A State Semifinal game in 2022. Smith was named the District 3-5A Most Valuable Player last season and landed a spot on the Amarillo Globe-News Preseason Basketball Super Team prior to the 2022-23 campaign.
Also a Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) All-State recognition, Smith landed as the #53 ranked girl's basketball prospect in Texas according to Premier Basketball Report.
