Junior from Killeen, Texas, leads FBS in yards per reception
NEW YORK CITY – Thanks to his strong performance on the field this season, junior WR Jyaire Shorter has been named one of 15 semifinalist for the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Award presented by the AP and the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
After missing the final 11 games of the season in 2021 due to injury, Shorter has returned in a big way in 2022, leading FBS with 27.4 yards per reception.
The award recognizes college football student-athletes from all divisions of college football for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. In a vote by a panel of AP writers, editors, sports information directors, and Fiesta Bowl Organization representatives, three college football student-athletes will be honored as 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Award winners.
In 12 games on the year, Shorter has 20 catches for 550 yards and nine touchdowns with 17 of the 20 total catches going for either a first down or a touchdown.
Nearly one-third (32.7 percent) of Shorter's career receptions have been touchdowns as he leads UNT and is tied for third in C-USA this season with nine (14th, FBS).
Shorter and the Mean Green return to action Friday night when they play in the Ryan C-USA Championship game at 6:30 p.m. inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
