SAN ANTONIO — The North Texas men's basketball team concludes its four-game road trip Thursday night with its Conference USA opener.
The Mean Green (9-2) take on in-state league opponent UTSA (6-5) Thursday at 7 p.m. CT from the Convocation Center in San Antonio. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on The Varsity Network app.
UNT is the reigning C-USA regular season champion. The Mean Green won a program-record 16 league games last season in route to the league title. They swept the Roadrunners last season and have won four of their last five meetings over UTSA. North Texas head coach Grant McCasland is 6-2 versus the Roadrunners in his six seasons.
North Texas beat UTSA last year in the Convocation Center, 59-48. At the time, the win was UNT's 15th straight victory, which broke the program-record for consecutive wins.
Eventual first team all-conference guard Tylor Perry scored 12 points and had five assists in the 11-point road win. Perry for his career is averaging 14 points per game versus the Roadrunners.
The Mean Green enter Thursday's conference opener on a four-game winning streak, which is tied for their longest winning streak of the year. UNT is coming off a 62-44 victory over UMass in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday. UNT outscored the Minutemen 40-18 in the second half and ended the game on a 12-0 run to pull away.
UNT, which had the nation's top scoring defense a season ago, features once again one of the best defenses in the country. Opponents are only averaging 51.6 points per game against the Mean Green. That ranks second in the nation as of Tuesday. Only one opponent all year has scored 60 or more points on North Texas.
After its trip to San Antonio, North Texas returns home on Dec. 29 to host Florida Atlantic. The Owls as of Tuesday are ranked No. 14 in the nation in the NET.
