Women’s Basketball Opens C-USA Play with Road Contest at FAU

DENTON, Texas (Dec. 28, 2022) - North Texas will compete in a Conference USA matchup for the first time in the 2022-23 season Thursday when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on one of the top teams in C-USA, Florida Atlantic.

It will be the 19th all-time meeting between the two programs with FAU holding a slight 10-8 edge in the series. UNT comes into the contest having won five of the last six games between the schools dating back to 2016.

UNT will be looking to start C-USA play strong after going 3-7 in the non-conference schedule with wins over Texas A&M Texarkana, Montana St. and Howard.

FAU heads into the matchup at 8-2 overall and 1-0 in C-USA play after knocking off FIU to open their conference schedule. The lone losses for the Owls this season came on the road against Power 5 opponents Miami and Illinois.

Quick Hitters

Senior Quincy Noble leads UNT offensively with 18.0 points per game this season, a figure that ranks second in Conference USA. Noble has scored in double figures in each of the last nine games for North Texas, including a 12-point performance last time out against Georgetown.
Junior forward Tommisha Lampkin has been one of the top post players in C-USA, leading the league in rebounds per game while sitting second in blocked shots.
Noble has had a strong career at UNT, with 969 points in Denton in just three seasons. The senior out of McKinney, Texas, needs just 31 more to become the 15th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in their time with the Mean Green. She would become just the eighth UNT women's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point milestone in less than three seasons.
The Mean Green will be opening C-USA play on the road for the third straight season after playing at MTSU in 2021-22 and at UAB in 2020-21.
UNT will be looking to win its conference opener for the fourth time in the last five seasons. In total, North Texas is 4-3 in the first game of C-USA play in the Jalie Mitchell era.

Series History

FAU holds a narrow 10-8 edge in the all-time series that dates back to 2007 when the programs faced each other as members of the Sun Belt Conference.
The Mean Green have won five of the last six meetings between the two squads including a 76-47 victory over the Owls in Denton a season ago.
Head coach Jalie Mitchell is 5-2 all-time against FAU as a head coach but just 1-2 against the Owls in Boca Raton.

Facing Off with FAU

In their second year under head coach Jennifer Sullivan, FAU has made a strong turnaround from a season ago.
Last year, the Owls finished 5-25 overall and 1-17 in conference play. FAU has already surpassed last season's win total with eight victories in their first 10 games and are one of four C-USA teams to start conference play 1-0 thus far.
Three different players are scoring in double figures for FAU including their leading scorer Aniyah Hubbard who is averaging 11.8 points per game over their first 10 contests.
Both Janeta Rozentale and Alexa Zaph are also averaging 10.0+ points per game with Rozentale scoring 10.3 points per contest and Zaph chipping in 10.0 points.
Much like UNT, the Owls are strong defending the 3-point line this season, leading the conference and sitting 13th in the country allowing opponents to shoot just 24.6 percent from downtown.
