UNT kicks off conference play on the road for the third straight season
BOCA RATON, Fla. (Dec. 29, 2022) – North Texas scored 12 straight points in just over two minutes late in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the full comeback as they fell 66-61 Thursday night on the road against Florida Atlantic to open C-USA play.
The Mean Green got 25 points from Quincy Noble as well as a career-high 15 points by Kendall McGruder as they dropped to 3-8 on the season and 0-1 in conference play while FAU improved to 9-2 and 2-0 in C-USA.
In the fourth quarter, UNT shot 75 percent and cut the deficit from 15 all the way down to three and had possession of the ball with 20 seconds remaining with a chance to tie the game. The Mean Green turned the ball over on their possession, however, and FAU hit a pair of free throws to ice the game and seal the five-point win.
As they have done multiple times this season, the Mean Green got off to a hot start scoring six of the first eight points of the game to take an early four-point edge.
The Owls were able to take the lead for the first time with four straight points of their own, but Tommisha Lampkin completed an and-one under the basket to give the Mean Green a 12-10 lead after the first.
With the score 19-18 in favor of FAU in the second, the Owls went on a 9-2 in just over two minutes of game action to take their largest lead of the first half at 28-20.
UNT, and more specifically Noble, made sure the deficit did not grow too large as the senior from McKinney went on a 7-0 run by herself to make the score 28-27 at the break.
The third quarter was a true back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than eight points. The Owls were able to stretch the lead to six heading into the final period with a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to make the score 45-39.
In the final period, FAU swelled the lead to as many as 15 with a 12-4 run that made the score 64-49 with just over three minutes left to play.
From that point on, UNT rattled off 12 straight points that was started by an and-one for Aniyah Johnson and was capped by five straight points from Noble to make the score 64-61.
Johnson finished the contest with a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with seven points.
As a team, FAU shot 55.3 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range to become one of two C-USA teams to move to 2-0 in C-USA play.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"I loved to see our players fighting back. You hate to be in that position in the first place but love to see them fight back. That last possession, it was a combination of a lot of things. A freshman point guard, a little bit of panic and just not being settled. We made all the plays down the stretch but that last possession we'll go back and say 'We really needed that. We really needed to be organized and we needed to execute.' That's a part of us unfortunately with some growing pains. If we get in that position again, we'll make the right play."
