Men's Basketball Loses Late Lead
12/29/2022 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team led Florida Atlantic by nine with 5:24 left in the game Thursday night at the Super Pit but couldn't hang on as the Owls ended the game on a 13-0 run and handed UNT a 50-46 loss to end its five-game winning streak.
The Mean Green (10-3, 1-1) were paced by all-conference guard Tylor Perry who scored a game-high 19 points.
"It was a heavyweight fight," Perry said of the game. "Just didn't get the stops late. But give credit to FAU, they're a really good team."
Thursday's contest featured two teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation in the NCAA NET with the Owls (12-1, 2-0) holding the No. 13 spot. North Texas and FAU are the top two NET ranked teams in Conference USA.
With just five minutes remaining in the game, North Texas appeared to be on its way to its first top 15 NET victory in program history. At that point in the game, UNT had held the Owls to 1-of-20 from deep. FAU entered the game as the nation's 12th-best 3-point shooting team. But from there on out, the Mean Green struggled to stop the highly ranked Owls who made two late 3-pointers. To add to it, the Mean Green ended the game without big man Abou Ousmane who fouled out with four minutes remaining.
Ousmane, who scored 37 points in their victory over UTSA on Dec. 22, finished Thursday with 12 points and seven rebounds.
North Texas has a quick turnaround as they host FIU on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network.
