Men's Basketball Beats Omaha, 75-45
12/3/2022 8:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team drained nine second-half 3-pointers Saturday night in route to a 75-45 home victory over Omaha.
The Mean Green (6-2) outscored the Mavericks (3-6) by 23 in the second half as they ran away with their fourth home win of the year. Senior Jayden Martinez scored all 13 of his points in final 20 minutes and was 4-of-4 from deep.
UNT junior Abou Ousmane led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
"Kai (Huntsberry) played a really good floor game, Abou was really solid and made a big jump with his composure around the basket," said head coach Grant McCasland who picked up his 110th career UNT victory Saturday. "We really played well in the second half offensively, especially Jayden Martinez. And our ability to grab offensive rebounds I thought was the difference in the game."
North Texas led wire-to-wire Saturday but in the first half struggled to pull away from the Mavericks as their offense shot just 35 percent from floor. As per usual, though, it was the Mean Green defense that kept its opponent at bay. UNO was 0-of-11 from deep in the first half, had six turnovers and trailed North Texas by seven at halftime.
In the second half, the Mean Green found their shooting touch and turned its seven-point halftime lead into a double-digit lead by the first media timeout and grew the lead to 20 points five minutes later.
UNT led by as many as 32 points Saturday as they shot 9-of-15 from deep in the second half and 51.6 percent overall.
The 75 points scored Saturday by North Texas are the second-most they've scored in a game this year.
North Texas, which is on an 11-game regular season home winning streak, hits the road next for a short trip down I-35 to face Metroplex rival UT Arlington on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT from the College Park Center in Arlington and will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network.
