English Turn Golf & Country Club | New Orleans
The North Texas women's golf team returns to action with a trip to New Orleans to open up the spring schedule in the Tulane Classic, formerly known as the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
THE EVENT: The English Turn Golf & Country Club will play as a par-72 course at 6,295 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over three days beginning Sunday and concluding Tuesday. All days will begin with tee times off Holes 1 and 10 with a 9 a.m., start on Sunday and Monday and an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday.
THE FIELD: There are 16 teams participating in the tournament: Boston College, Charlotte, Clemson, Iowa, Memphis, Michigan, Nebraska, North Texas, Rutgers, Southern Miss, SMU, Texas State, Tulane, UAB, UTSA and Wichita State.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Audrey Tan, Patricia Sinolungan, Sakura Sugiyama, Ellie Roth and Emilie Ricaud, and Shreya Pal will be competing as an individual. Sugiyama will be making her collegiate debut after arriving on campus last month.
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
LAST TIME OUT: UNT finished second at the Olde Stone Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to close the fall season back in October, led by Audrey Tan's second-place individual finish.
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over almost six years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green ended last season ranked 36th.
THE GOAT: Lauren Cox, who graduated last spring to finish off her stellar five-year Mean Green career, has attained partial status on the Epson Tour for the 2022 season, and she's currently on staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
AKERS SAYS: "We are very excited to begin our season in New Orleans. English Turn is an exceptional golf course that formerly hosted a PGA Tour event. Many of our players played the course two years ago. The greens have been resurfaced but the layout remains the same."
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: The Mean Green now have a new player in freshman Sakura Sugiyama, who enrolled last month and hails from Australia. She will be making her collegiate debut, and Akers said he is impressed with what he's seen so far.
"We have a new player on our roster this spring that we are excited about," he said. "Sakura Sugiyama joins us from Australia where she trained under a very respected swing coach. I have been very impressed with her work ethic and the way she conducts herself."
UP NEXT: The Mean Green will have a quick turnaround and play on Feb. 21-22, at the ICON Invitational in Humble, Texas.
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to break in their brand new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, the new $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
