Samaniego broke his own North Texas school record in the weight throw for the third-consecutive meet
DENTON, Texas – Following yet another record-breaking performance, Chris Samaniego was named the indoor season's final Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

"It's a big blessing to be able to have that accomplishment," Samaniego said. "I'm just glad that my teammates are there to push me and my coaches are there to push me. They inspire me to be great. I see them be great, so I just want to do what they're doing. It's a good feeling."

Samaniego broke his own North Texas school record in the weight throw for the third-consecutive meet, heaving it 62-2.25 (18.95m) on his fifth throw. It is the second-best mark in C-USA this season.

This is the second-career weekly honor for Samaniego, who also took the C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week award on Jan. 20, 2021. The senior from Monahans, Texas, is the second UNT student-athlete to garner weekly honors this season, as Karlington Anunagba was named Conference USA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 1.

The Mean Green are set for the 2022 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, Feb. 19-20, at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala. The meet will be hosted by UAB.
