Brand Awareness Expert Kicks Off New Programming

DENTON - With the emergence of Name Image and Likeness in college athletics, North Texas athletics is helping its student-athletes increase brand awareness and promote their individual brand with the creation of a Leadership and Personal Brand Development department, headed by new Senior Associate AD Jessie Gardner.
The new effort had its first event for all student-athletes on Wednesday in the Hub Club at Apogee Stadium and featured expert speaker Will Baggett, who spoke to student-athletes about building their personal brand.
Baggett touched on several aspects of personal brand, such as the ABCs of personal branding: Appearance, behavior, communication and digital footprint. His presentation also explained other aspects of developing a personal brand in the new age of NIL like the relationship of financial capital to social capital.
"The quote Will shared from Jeff Bezos, 'Your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room,' stood out to me," senior football player Manase Mose said. "I can use this quote and apply it to myself when I interact with people because who I am as a person will depict my reputation with others."
Freshman women's golfer Chandler Browning said events like Wednesday's are what will help her, and her contemporaries have success after college, whether it be at the next level in their respective sport or in the business world.
"The event tonight was amazing," Browning said. "Will Baggett made it very clear how important your appearance, behavior, and communication are in building your brand. I also like how he talked about life outside of sport. I'm planning on becoming either a physician's assistant or a physical therapist after I finish my career in golf. I know I will be successful in the future because of all the help I have received as a student-athlete at UNT."
Other sessions for student-athletes this semester include "Financial Foundations I: Money Matters," featuring guest speakers from the UNT Student Money Management Center Staff on March 2 and "Elevate Your Brand: Professional Networking," with Amber Harris from Athletes2Careers on March 30.
