Roth Leads Mean Green Into Final Day at ICON

HUMBLE, Texas - The North Texas women's golf team opened play on Monday in the ICON Invitational at the Golf Club of Houston and stumbled in the second of two rounds on the day against a loaded field featuring 10 teams ranked in the top 50.
The Mean Green, who entered the tournament as one of those ranked teams at No. 44, were in good shape after the first round of the day, thanks in large part to a stellar round from sophomore Ellie Roth. She shot an opening-round 67 to enter the second round of the day alone in second place and two shots off the lead.Â
But after a rough second round, the Mean Green sit in 13th place entering Tuesday's final round at 17-over par.
"We had a rough day today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "When you play the best teams in the nation, you have to avoid big numbers and minimize mistakes. Ellie had an incredible first round but we didn't capitalize on it. Our goal tomorrow will be to break par and try to pass some teams."
Roth enters the final round at even-par after going 5-under in the first round, and she leads the Mean Green contingent in a tie for 17th place. Junior Emilie Ricaud is tied for 23rd at 1-over par for the tournament.
UNT will be paired with Colorado and Texas State for Tuesday's final round, which will begin at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start. Fans can follow the tournament live on Golfstat.
