ICON Invitational
Golf Club of Houston | Humble, Texas
Â
The North Texas women's golf team returns to action against a loaded field after a quick turnaround from the Tulane Classic Presented by Chad Brownstein, which the Mean Green won last week in New Orleans. Senior Patricia Sinolungan also shared the individual championship to mark her first win as a college player.
Â
THE EVENT: The Golf Club of Houston will play as a par-72 course at 6,392 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over two days beginning Monday, with 36 holes and concluding Tuesday with the final 18 holes. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 15Â teams participating in the tournament: Colorado, Houston, No. 29 Illinois, Maryland, No. 36 Michigan State, No. 23 Mississippi, No. 44Â North Texas, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 40 Purdue, No. 20 TCU, Tennessee, No. 16 Texas A&M, Texas State, No. 26 Texas Tech and No. 22 USC.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Patricia Sinolungan, Audrey Tan, Ellie Roth, Emilie Ricaud and Sakura Sugiyama, who made her collegiate debut in New Orleans last week.Â
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: UNT won the Tulane Classic last week to mark its first win of the season and third in less than a calendar year. Patricia Sinolungan tied for the individual championship, and senior Audrey Tan finished third followed by sophomore Ellie Roth, who claimed fourth for her best collegiate finish.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over almost six years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green went to New Orleans last week ranked No. 65 but moved up to No. 44 after the win.
THE GOAT: Lauren Cox, who graduated last spring to finish off her stellar five-year Mean Green career, has attained partial status on the Epson Tour for the 2022 season, and she's currently on staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
Â
AKERS SAYS: "The ladies should certainly be confident heading down to Houston this weekend," head coach Michael Akers said. "We saw some very good things in New Orleans and the Golf Club of Houston should play somewhat similar. Last year we played very solid in Houston, especially the final round. The field is very good, but I hope our team realizes they just defeated the No. 10 ranked team in nation (in New Orleans). We are looking at the weather and preparing for wind and possible rain."
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will head to the Sunshine State to play in the UNF Intercollegiate, hosted by North Florida, in Jacksonville on March 7-8.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to break in their brand new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, the new $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
