DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team hosts Texas State Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT in the first round of the 2022 National Invitation Tournament. This is the first all-time appearance in the NIT for both programs.
Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, which can be found through The Varsity App.
Tickets to Tuesday's first round game are on sale now. The North Texas Division of Student Affairs, Department of Athletics and the generosity of several donors has made student tickets free for all enrolled UNT students.
"We're excited to be part of this tournament and to be hosting a very competitive opponent," said senior JJ Murray. "Being able to host is huge and we need our fans to pack the Pit Tuesday like they did all year."
Tuesday will be the 88th all-time meeting between the two schools. There's no opponent North Texas has played in its history more than the Bobcats.
The Mean Green and TXST both earned automatic bids into the 2022 NIT with first place finishes in their respective conferences.
North Texas won the Conference USA regular season with a 16-2 league record. The 16 league wins were a single-season program best and the second most in C-USA history. This was the third straight year the Mean Green took home C-USA hardware as they won the 2021 C-USA Tournament title and the 2020 C-USA regular season title. This marks the first time in program history the Mean Green have been to a national NCAA postseason tournament in consecutive seasons. UNT reached the 2021 NCAA Tournament last year and upset Purdue in the first round, 78-69 for the program's first ever NCAA Tournament victory. This is the third national NCAA postseason tournament the Mean Green have made under fifth-year head coach Grant McCasland. UNT won the 2018 College Basketball Invitation in McCasland's first season as the head coach of North Texas.
Texas State posted a 12-3 conference record in the Sun Belt. They ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak.
Though it will be the 88th all-time meeting between the two schools, Tuesday will be their first meeting since Dec. 19, 2010. UNT won the last matchup 85-62.
