CHARLOTTE, NC – North Texas softball shutout Charlotte in game one of the series Friday afternoon 1-0 at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium. The Mean Green improved to 17-6 on the season and 6-1 in conference play behind a brilliant performance by freshman RHP Skylar Savage.
QUOTING HEAD COACH RODNEY DELONG
"Skylar (Savage) threw a great game and our defense was outstanding. We will have to continue to play defense and pitch well because Charlotte is a great offensive team. I think we will hit it better tomorrow. "
RECAP:
The Mean Green (17-6) started with an early run in the top of the first inning. Lexi Cobb led off with a single for North Texas and advanced to second on an error. Sophomore Kailey Gamble then picked up an RBI on a groundout that brought Cobb home to score.
Both defenses battled for the next four innings as both were held hitless.
Skylar Savage (6-2) started the game for UNT and pitched five hitless innings and struck out four batters before senior outfielder Anna Devereaux recorded the 49ers (21-9) first hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Savage picked up the win and pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and only surrendered one hit.
In her return to the lineup, outfielder Lexi Cobb finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored the only run of the game. Cobb showed no rust after missing the series against Florida Atlantic and continued her offensive tear. She recorded two of the four hits for the Mean Green.
Lindsey Walljasper (9-3) was charged the loss for the 49ers while pitching a complete game and finishing with six strikeouts.
