Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to Houston

DENTON– UNT Tennis dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 match to Houston. After winning the doubles point the Mean Green (9-9) battled through singles play with several comebacks and tiebreakers but ultimately fell in the nearly five hour match.

DOUBLES

Jasmine Adams and Sophia Hummel made quick work of their match winning 6-1
Lucie Devier and Maria Ponomareva clinched the doubles point with a dominant 6-1 match in the first position.
Saki Oyama and Liisa Vehvilainen were ahead 4-2 with their match left unfinished.

SINGLES

Adams struggled in the second position 3-6, 3-6.
Oyama slipped 2-6, 2-6 giving the Cougars a second point.
Zhou played a close first set winning 7-5. She kept the momentum going with a 6-3 win in set two tying the match at 2-2.
Ponomareva cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win as the Mean Green opened a 3-2 advantage.
Devier fell 6-7 in the first set but bounced back 6-4 in set two. The final set was met with a 3-6 loss tying the match and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Vehvilainen played a tightly-contested match from start to finish. She won set won 7-6 but fell 6-7 in set two. This forced a intense third set that was narrowly dropped 6-7.

QUOTABLE

"I could not be more proud of this team," head coach Sujay Lama said. "Everyone poured their heart and soul today and left it all out on the court.
Liisa was a warrior and never gave up until the very end. This team is so resilient, and we know that all these tough matches are making us stronger and preparing us for a big finish."

The Mean Green will make the short trip to Arlington to face UTA on Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT.
