NCAA Albuquerque Regional
The Championship Course at UNM | Albuquerque, N.M.
Â
The North Texas women's golf team will finally get its fair shot at the NCAA Regional this week as the Mean Green play in the Albuquerque Regional with their sights set on the NCAA Finals later this month in Scottsdale, Arizona. The top four teams advance to Scottsdale, as does the top two individuals not on an advancing team.
Â
THE EVENT: The Championship Course at UNMÂ will play as a par-72 course at 6,414 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over three days beginning Monday and concluding on Wednesday. Each day will have set tee times, and UNT will be paired with Louisville and Oklahoma on Monday with tee times from 9:55-10:39 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 12 teams participating in the tournament, including nine ranked in the top 50 nationally. The No. 47 Mean Green earned the 8-seed in the regional, and will be joined by No. 2 Oregon, No. 11 Florida, No. 13 Texas, No. 23 Arizona, No. 28 Georgia, No. 33 TCU, No. 38 Louisville, No. 50 Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Audrey Tan, Patricia Sinolungan, Emilie Ricaud, Ellie Roth, Marija Jucmane and Shreya Pal. One will be designated as the alternate and can be subbed in before any of the three rounds begins.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Golfstat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
Â
LAST TIME OUT:Â UNT repeated as Conference USA champion with a dramatic, one-shot win over fellow NCAA Regional participant UTSA. Seniors Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan tied for sixth to lead the way for the Mean Green.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over almost six years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are currently ranked 47th.
THE GOAT: Lauren Cox, who graduated last spring to finish off her stellar five-year Mean Green career, has attained partial status on the Epson Tour for the 2022 season, and she's currently on staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
Â
AKERSÂ SAYS:Â "Our team is looking forward to teeing it up in Albuquerque," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "It will be important to adjust to the altitude of 5,300 feet and the different grass. The forecast is for windy and warm, which should not bother us. Obviously, we have waited to play in regionals for a while. We should have gone in 2020 but the season was canceled. Then, last year the travesty at LSU cost us an opportunity to play. We plan to play one shot at a time and add them up at the end."
UP NEXT:Â If the Mean Green can finish in the top four, they will advance to the NCAA Final on May 20-25 at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to break in their brand new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, the new $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
