Softball Falls Sunday to Marshall

DENTON, TX – UNT softball fell to Marshall Sunday afternoon in the series finale, 9-6 at Lovelace Stadium. UNT rallied to take the lead going into the seventh inning before Marshall ended with a five-run seventh inning. Despite the loss, the Mean Green end the weekend with a series win after winning on both Friday and Saturday.

RECAP- Marshall 9, UNT 6

Marshall took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a home run to left field after a scoreless first two innings.

North Texas came right back and evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when senior Tayla Evans hit a two-run blast to left field.

Marshall immediately answered with two more runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead 4-2. The Thundering Herd scored one run on a fielder's choice before the second run came home on a wild pitch.

North Texas rallied in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the day. Kailey Gamble got the scoring started with a home run to right field to cut the deficit to 4-3. Four batters later, Mikayla Smith brought in two runs to take a 5-4 lead on an RBI single.

The Mean Green held the lead until the top of the seventh when Marshall added five runs on five hits to take a 9-5 lead.

UNT added one run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sac fly by Kalei Christensen to make it 9-6 before the comeback attempt was halted.

Ashley Peters started the game and finished with 2.0 innings pitched. Skylar Savage (L, 13-7) came into the game in the third inning and struck out four batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

Evans finished 1-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, one hit, and one run on her senior day.

Sydney Nester (W, 24-9) pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters.

Mya Stevenson finished 2-for-2 with two runs, three RBI, and one walk to lead Marshall on offense.

UNT will play on Thursday, May 12 at 12 pm CT in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Conference USA Softball Championship. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
