Bleed Green Stuns TBT 2-Seed In Wichita
7/22/2022 1:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WICHITA, Kansas - Bleed Green, a team consisting of several former North Texas men's basketball student-athletes, opened up play Friday in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) and stunned second-seeded Eberlein Drive with a 79-78 win after Jordan Stevens drained a 3-pointer to hit the game's target score of 79, which was set by the Elam Ending format with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Needing a 3-pointer with Eberlein Drive sitting just one point shy of the target, Thomas Bell (2022) came up with a huge steal before Brandon Jefferson hoisted up a long-range shot and was able to grab his own rebound and find Stevens outside the arc for the game-winner, as the 7-seed Bleed Green advanced in the Wichita bracket to play on Saturday at 5 p.m., against Purple and Black, consisting of former Kansas State players.Â
Bleed Green trailed by as many as 11 points twice in the game but went on a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter that stretched into the Elam Ending, as they were led by 20 points from Shannon Shorter (2011). Jefferson chipped in 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting from long range, and Stevens added 16. Bell had a well-rounded performance with 6 points, 10 boards, two blocks and two steals, including the one to set up Stevens' game-winner.
Two teams will advance from each of TBT's four regionals to compete in the tournament's championship weekend at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Quarterfinal games will be played on July 31, with the semifinals on Aug. 1. The TBT Championship takes place Aug. 3.
