INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA on Friday announced North Texas Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker as the National Invitation Tournament committee chair for the 2022-23 season.Â
Â
Baker, who begins his seventh season as UNT's Vice President and Director of Athletics, has been a member of the eight-person NIT committee since the 2019-20 season. The committee is responsible for the selection, seeding and bracketing of the 32-team postseason basketball championship.
Â
Baker will chair a committee that features returning members: New Orleans Vice President of Athletics and Recreation Tim Duncan, former Virginia Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage, West Coast Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez and former longtime DI men's basketball head coach Bob Williams (UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis). The NCAA also announced the committee's three newest members who are legendary former head coaches: retired Belmont head coach Rick Byrd who recorded 805 career wins over a 38-year head coaching career, recently retired Davidson head coach Bob McKillop who in 33 seasons led the Wildcats to 23 conference championships and coached four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry at Davidson (2006-2009), and retired longtime head coach Gary Waters who led Kent State, Rutgers and Cleveland State to the NIT. Â Â
Â
On Friday the NCAA also announced the 2023 NIT will move its semifinal and final rounds to Las Vegas at Orleans Arena. And in 2024, Indianapolis will host the final two rounds with the games being played at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The NIT will continue to feature 32 teams with the first, second and quarterfinal rounds being played at campus sites. New York City's Madison Square Garden had been the home of the NIT since its inception in 1938, with the one exception being in 2021 when UNT hosted the tournament due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.Â
Â
The two new host cities were chosen after a nation-wide bid process in the spring.
