SOUTH JAKARTA, INDONESIA - UNT senior golfer Patricia Sinolungan mixed it up with the pros this week at the Simone Asia Pacific Cup and finished the three-round event as the top amateur in a field comprised mostly of professionals, including former World No. 1 Lydia Ko, and several other highly ranked players.
Sinolungan shot a well-rounded 71-72-71 to finish the event on Saturday at 2-under par in a tie for sixth place and one shot back of two golfers tied for fourth. She carded 13 birdies over the three rounds to go with 31 pars and was 2-under on Par 5s, which enabled her to compete with, and beat, some of the world's best.Â
"I am stoked with a T6 finish in my professional tournament debut, but I have heaps of people to be thankful for: Simone group, AGLF, Mr. Murdaya Poo, Indonesian Golf Association, and many others behind the scenes," Sinolungan said. "Without them, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to tee it up in this amazing event. The course setup was pretty long, at 6,806 yards, along with the tricky, grainy greens, heat, and constantly changing gusty winds it was a grind for me all three days.
"The last round was tough, I had a cold start, but stayed patient, kept going for the pins, and eventually, the birdies came on holes 9, 13, 14 and 18, which helped me wrap up the tournament with a 71 and finish 2-under. I'm grateful for what I achieved. The training I've been doing with my coach this summer has been paying off, but I wouldn't have done it without the support of UNT, as well. I'm looking forward to going back this fall and making things happen."
Ko, who finished third and is currently ranked fourth in the world, has over $14 million in career earnings on the LPGA Tour and nearly $2 million this year, thanks to 10 top-10 showings and a victory. No. 88-ranked So Yeon Ryu took second. Sinolungan beat South Korea's Hyo Joo Kim, the world's 11th-ranked player, and No. 116 Tiffany Chan, by a shot.
"I am extremely pleased to see Patty's performance at the Asia Pacific Cup," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Patty texted back in May that she might get an invite. Fortunately, she did and certainly made the most of it. Today she was two over through eight holes but made four birdies in her last 10 holes to get the round under par. I would say Patty is one of the best fighters I have ever coached. She never gives up."
Sinolungan and fellow graduate student Audrey Tan will both lead the Mean Green into the 2022-23 season as fifth-year players looking to complete a Three-peat of Conference USA championships before the program begins play next year in The American, and Akers said he feels good about having those two leading the program in their final year.
"I am very excited for the season to begin," Akers said. "We have two fifth-year seniors leading us who are both well on their way to playing professional golf."
