Four players tally double-digit kills in the loss
DENTON, TEXAS – After dropping the first two sets of the day, the North Texas women's volleyball team battled back to take sets three and four and force a winner-take-all fifth set, but ultimately fell 3-2 Saturday against UT-Rio Grande Valley in the final contest of the North Texas Invitational.
The Mean Green fell in the opening two sets 25-20, 25-15 but were able to grab a thrilling 30-28 win in the third and win 25-23 in the fourth before falling in the fifth set 15-10.
Junior Treyaunna Rush led the way for UNT in the match with 17 kills, six blocks and a .233 hitting percentage. Three other Mean Green players finished in double figures in kills; Truli Levy with 13, Aryn Johnson with 12 and Sh'Diamond Holly with 11.
Sophomore Ceci Harness ran an efficient offense throughout the match with 44 assists to set a new career-high. On the defensive side of the ball, Aleeyah Galdeira had a match-high 21 digs and both Victoria Fontenot (11) and Johnson (10) finished in double figures in digs.
The 12-kill, 11-dig performance for Johnson is the sixth double-double of her career and the first of the season for a UNT player.
The Vaqueros were able to come out of the gates hot in each of the first two sets, leading by as many as seven (15-8) in the opener and 10 (25-15) in the second to cruise to a 2-0 lead.
The Mean Green did not back down, however, rallying from a 17-12 deficit with six straight points to take the lead. From there, the two teams traded points in the set with neither team leading by more than two. In total, there were six set points down the stretch in the set before a double block from Levy and Rush gave UNT a 30-28 win.
In the fourth, UNT kept the foot on the gas pedal as they never trailed in the set and were able to keep UTRGV at bay for a 25-23 victory to force a fifth.
The Vaqueros also showed some resiliency, though, bounding back to win five of the first seven points of set number five. After UNT answered with a run of their own to tie things up at seven, UTRGV was able to close things out with eight of the last 11 points, including three straight down the stretch, to grab a five set win.
The Mean Green will return to the court Tuesday when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m.
