
Mean Green Volleyball Defeated at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – North Texas volleyball lost its first road match of the season, falling to Stephen F. Austin 3-1 (22-25, 26-28, 25-22, 16-25) at Robert H. Shelton Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mean Green to 1-3 on the season, while the Ladyjacks remain undefeated with a 4-0 record.
Treyaunna Rush recorded a season-high 20 kills with a .298 hitting percentage along with two assists and a block. Aryn Johnson chipped in 12 kills and four blocks, while Sh'Diamond Holly and Truli Levy both recorded eight kills on the night.
Lauren Phillips contributed a match-best three service aces to pair with 14 assists and seven digs. Ceci Harness registered 32 assists and 10 digs while senior Aleeyah Galdeira added 22 digs and seven assists to her resume.
Addi Corley led North Texas off of the bench with four kills, all in the third set.
Set 1: A back and forth affair that opened with a 4-1 UNT run which was answered with four points from the Ladyjacks. The Mean Green then collected six consecutive points for a 10-5 lead. The streak was highlighted by two service aces from Phillips and kills from Rush, Owens and Levy. Errors on both sides kept the set level at 21 points a piece. SFA closed with a 4-1 run to take the first 25-22.
Set 2: The Mean Green could not gain more than a single point lead throughout the first half of the set over the hosts. Tied at 14-14, SFA went on a 9-2 run to push the set to the brink with a 23-16 advantage. Rush then led North Texas on an 8-0 march back to give the visitors a 24-23 edge. SFA was able to stave off the charge and hold on to win the set 28-26. North Texas finished the set with 19 kills on 45 attacks for a .311 hitting percentage.
Set 3: Down 0-2 in the match, North Texas would not go quietly with Rush and Johnson each grabbing a pair of kills to open the set. Corley entered the fray and contributed four kills to give her side a lead. The trio of Rush, Johnson and Corley accounted for 13 of the initial 14 points in the set. A double block from Holly and Rush widened the UNT lead to 18-15. The team would finish the set on a 5-2 run to take the third and bring the match to 1-2.
Set 4: Building off of the third set victory, the Mean Green began with a 5-1 run with freshman Victoria Fontenot serving on the initial four points, including a service ace. SFA roared back to draw even at 5-5 with the match in the balance. North Texas found a rhythm going on a 3-1 spell to regain the lead 8-6. The hosts finished the match on a 19-8 run to give the Ladyjacks a 25-16 set win and match victory.
Up Next: The Mean Green will travel to Arlington for the UTA Classic on Friday to open against Providence College at 4 p.m.
