Mean Green to face Providence, A&M-Commerce and UTA in local tournament
ARLINGTON, Texas – North Texas volleyball will travel to the familiar confines of College Park Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington for the UTA Classic.
The Mean Green will open its weekend set with a matchup against Providence on Friday at 4 p.m. The Friars (2-1) are coming off of a winning weekend at the 2022 Iona Gaels Volleyball Tournament. The match will be the first meeting between the two programs.
A double-header on Saturday will feature historically familiar foes, beginning with a matinee at 1:30 p.m. versus Texas A&M-Commerce (0-3) who is entering its first season of Division I play. North Texas holds a 15-11 advantage in the all-time record. The most recent meeting between the two schools came in 1987 when East Texas State met North Texas State University in Denton.
The final matchup of the weekend will be the 62nd meeting against UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. UNT has captured wins in six of the last seven matches, dating back to 2011. North Texas first played A&M-Commerce and UTA in 1976, its inaugural season.
UNT (1-3) are looking to add a few wins to their record this weekend after a road loss to SFA on Tuesday. Junior opposite Treyaunna Rush played a starring role in the match setting a career high with 20 kills and 47 attacks. Entering play on Thursday, Rush is ranked top 25 in the nation in both kills (18th) and points (61).
Senior libero Aleeyah Galdeira surpassed 900 career digs against SFA to bring her career total to 907. She has collected double-digit digs in all four matches this season and ranks 12th in the country with 69 total.
Offensively, North Texas is among the best in the nation ranking sixth in team assists (194), ninth in team kills (205) and 12th in total attacks (536), through Wednesday's results. These marks all rank first in Conference USA.
