DALLAS - Freshman Mason Lewis had her breakout tournament earlier this week in Norman, Oklahoma, and was rewarded with Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors, the league announced on Wednesday.
Playing in just her second collegiate event, Lewis shot a 69-69-71 to finish tied for 15th at 1-under par on Monday at the Schooner Fall Classic while competing as an individual.
The freshman and former Class 5A Texas state champion from Granbury finished with 10 birdies over the three rounds and added an eagle on the 379-yard Par-4 14th hole at Belmar Golf Club. She tied for fourth in the field in Par-3 scoring at 1-under par. Though the first Golfstat poll of the season is yet to be released, there were three teams in the Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll's top 25 - No. 16 Florida State, No. 17 Clemson and No. 19 Oklahoma State, while Baylor, Tulsa and Virginia Tech were all receiving votes entering the tournament.Â
"It didn't take long for Mason to show she belongs in our program," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Going into the season, I believed she would be a starter for us. This honor certainly shows that is the case. In the past nine months, we have had four different players named C-USA Golfer of the Week. All four of them are on our roster this year. Our depth is evident, and I'm excited to get to Tulsa to compete again."
The Mean Green will return to action Oct. 10-11, when they travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Tulsa Invite.Â
Fans can follow the program throughout the season on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and can check MeanGreenSports.com for tournament recaps and more.
