Mean Green sending four players to take on top competition in California
DENTON, TEXAS (Sept. 28, 2022) – Coming off a strong performance in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional last weekend, the Mean Green return to action Thursday through Sunday when they compete in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Intercollegiate Championship in San Diego, Calif. at the Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego.
The Mean Green will be sending four players to the tournament, sophomore Jasmine Adams, sophomore Olivia Malm, and freshmen Matilde Morais and Gloria Alogo Piqueras who has thrived in her first two tournaments of 2022-23.
The event, in its first year of existence, will be another opportunity for the Mean Green to fine-tune their skills as they prepare for the spring season.
The winner of the singles draw will receive an invitation to a USTA Pro Circuit Event. As with all events in the fall, UNT players will all compete individually with a chance to improve their overall rankings.
Adams started the season off by advancing to the quarterfinal in singles play at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic and followed it up by advancing all the way to the consolation bracket final in the ITA Texas Regional last weekend. She also teamed up with freshman Matilde Morais last weekend and advanced to the semifinal of the doubles main draw for the second consecutive year.
Alogo Piqueras has also had a solid start to her collegiate career, advancing to the bracket final in the Boston Invitational in week one and becoming one of just two freshmen to make the round of 16 at the ITA Regional. Alongside sophomore Olivia Malm, Alogo Piqueras also advanced to the doubles main draw quarterfinal last weekend in Fort Worth.
In total, the Mean Green have had solid performances in all three tournaments they have competed in, going 19-9 overall in the opening weekend and following it up by finishing 24-14 as a team at the regional.
