DENTON - The two-time defending Conference USA champion UNT women's golf team will play four fall tournaments, predominantly against Big 12 competition, before four more spring events heading into its attempt to win a third straight C-USA championship before moving to The American next season.
UNT, which returns a wealth of experience and adds a couple of promising freshmen, will open the season Sept. 20-21 in Bryan, Texas, at the Texas A&M Mo'Morial before a quick turn to the OU Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma just a few days later. After a dual match at Oral Roberts, the Mean Green will return to Tulsa for the Tulsa Invite before finishing out the fall slate in late October at the Battle at the Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, hosted by TCU.
The Mean Green will play four events in the spring, not including a dual match at Houston in January, before heading to the C-USA Championship at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where the team repeated as conference champions a year ago. The spring schedule will be loaded with top competition at the UCF Challenge, the always-strong fields of the ICON Invitational in Houston and the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona, and the fifth installment of UNT's tournament, The Bruzzy, which will be played this year at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on April 1-2.
"Golf is very unique in that we schedule any tournaments we want in the regular season," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "We play primarily against the Big 12 but also see many SEC and Big 10 teams during the year. Our strength of schedule certainly helps our national ranking."
The Mean Green have now finished the past two seasons ranked inside the top-50 nationally, and will have several key players back this year, highlighted by fifth-year seniors Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan, who were both All-Conference USA performers last year, along with junior Ellie Roth.
"I'm excited to release another incredible tournament schedule," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "I firmly believe we need to play the best in order to become the best. Our goal this year is to advance to the national championship. I feel very blessed to have our top two players back for an additional year. As soon as the NCAA announced the players in 2020 would receive an additional year, I immediately asked Audrey and Patty if they would play for five years. They both said yes. I want to make this year as special as possible for them to go out in style."
