FT. MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2023) – After dropping the doubles point and a lengthy rain delay, the North Texas women's tennis team stormed back in a big way, winning all six singles points to take home a 6-1 victory over Miami of Ohio to open the 2023 spring campaign Friday in Florida.
The Mean Green swept through every singles matchup in the dual to start the spring with a win for the second consecutive season.
"Although we had a tough start being down one point, the team worked hard and pulled it through for the singles," sophomore Jasmine Adams said. "The team produced great energy, determination and fight throughout the whole day. I am so proud of the girls. Our preseason training, all the hard work through the winter has paid off. I can't wait to compete more with this team."
To start the day, Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Kexuan Zhou teamed up on line three in doubles play and earned a 6-4 victory.
The other two doubles teams were unable to grab a win, however, putting UNT down 1-0 at the start of singles play.
The Mean Green did not take their foot off the gas in any of their six singles matchups, however.
Playing on line three Alogo Piqueras was the first UNT player to grab a victory, earning a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win to tie the overall match at 1-1.
Moments later, Olivia Halvorsen took home a 6-1, 7-6 (10-3) victory on line five to give the Mean Green the lead that they would not relinquish.
Adams was the next UNT player to pick up a win, dominating the second set for a 7-5, 6-1 straight sets win on line one.
Matilde Morais officially gave the Mean Green the team win after she also won in straight sets at line two 6-3, 6-2.
Although the result was already decided, the two teams continued play through the final two singles matchups.
At line six, Zhou earned her second victory of the day, taking down Maya Ushio 6-4, 6-2 before Olivia Malm completed the sweep, winning 7-5, 6-2 at line four.
