UNT earns first 7-0 sweep since January of 2022
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 22, 2023) – Playing at home for the first time this season, UNT made a statement with a 7-0 sweep of DePaul Sunday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green dropped just one set on the day en route to their third victory of the season while handing the Blue Demons their first loss of the year. It is the first 7-0 sweep for UNT since Jan. 30, 2022 when they took down Lamar.
"It was amazing to have our first home match and to watch how everyone supported each other throughout the day," sophomore Olivia Malm said. "I'm really proud of our team and I can't wait to keep building on this success moving forward this season."
UNT started the day by taking the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais picked up a 6-2 win at line one, both lines two and three found themselves in a tiebreak at 6-6.
Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Olivia Malm were the first to break through, winning the tiebreak 7-5 to take home a 7-6 win and give the Mean Green a 1-0 lead after doubles.
In singles play, Olivia Halvorsen was the first UNT player to earn a win with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 effort at line five.
Adams was the next to put a point on the board for the Mean Green, taking home a 6-4, 6-3 win at line one to improve her singles record at line one to 3-1.
Moments later, Gloria Alogo Piqueras sealed the team win for UNT with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at line three to put the Mean Green on top 4-0.
Morais then earned her win in straight sets in dramatic fashion. In a tiebreak point in the first set, Morais rallied all the way from a 6-1 deficit, fending off five consecutive set points, to grab an 8-6 tiebreak win. She would go on to take the second set 6-2 to earn the thrilling fifth point for UNT.
At line six, Kexuan Zhou also went to a tiebreaker in her first set, winning it 7-3. The senior then battled for a hard-fought win in the second to take the match 7-6 (3), 7-5.
The final singles matchup of the day happened at line four with Malm as she split her first two sets 6-3, 4-6 and found herself down 5-4 and facing a match point for her opponent. The sophomore did not blink, however, winning that game and then the next two to earn a 7-5 win and complete the sweep.
