DENTON — The reigning National Invitation Tournament champion UNT men's basketball team will open the 2023-24 season on Nov. 7 with a home game versus Northern Iowa.
The season opener is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, on the The Varsity Network app by Learfield.
This will be just the second time North Texas and Northern Iowa have ever played one another. It'll be the first time the two schools have played in Denton.
Northern Iowa is coming off a 14-18 season but returns all five starters from last year and is projected to once again be one of the top teams in the highly competitive Missouri Valley Conference. UNI is led by longtime head coach Ben Jacobson who has taken his Panthers program to five NCAA Tournaments since being elevated to head coach in 2006. Most notably, UNI reached the Sweet 16 in 2010 when they upset No. 1 seed Kansas in the Round of 32. They last reached the Big Dance in 2016 and nearly advanced to the Sweet 16 again but fell to Texas A&M in double overtime in the Round of 32.
In April the Mean Green elevated associate head coach Ross Hodge to the head coach position. Hodge has been the mastermind behind the North Texas defense that has led the nation in fewest points allowed per game in each of the last two seasons. UNT return three starters from its NIT run in addition to adding seven newcomers to its roster.
North Texas will enter its season opener having won eight straight home games dating back to last year.
