DENTON — With a trip to the American Athletic Conference tournament on the line, the UNT soccer team welcomes its Metroplex rival SMU to Denton Thursday night for its regular season finale.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
Thursday will be the 17th all-time meeting between the two schools but it'll be the first time North Texas (8-4-3, 2-3-3) has hosted the Mustangs (8-5-1, 4-3-1) since 2011 when the Mean Green beat them 2-1. It'll also mark the first time in program history the two schools have met as conference opponents.
UNT enters Thursday's match holding the final spot for the eight-team league tournament, which begins next week in Florida. A win or a draw versus SMU on Thursday clinches North Texas' berth into the single-elimination postseason tournament. A loss, however, and the Mean Green then will need the help of Temple who are at UAB Thursday. If the Blazers defeat last place Temple and combined with a Mean Green loss then they steal that final tournament position from UNT.
In addition to securing a spot into the postseason tournament with a win, the Mean Green could boost their seeding considerably with a positive result and with some help from other teams.
The first 200 North Texas fans to Thursday's match will get souvenir Mean Green shirts. Also domestic and craft beers will be discounted until kickoff.
The UNT Homecoming bonfire is scheduled to begin on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT near DATCU Stadium and the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Mean Green fans attending Thursday's soccer match should expect Bonnie Brae Street to be closed starting roughly around the start of the bonfire. Normal soccer parking lots will still be available for Thursday.
