DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team won its exhibition Sunday over Sam Houston, 63-53, at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green, who are the reigning NIT champions and are led by first-year head coach Ross Hodge, got 24 points from their bench in the 10-point win. Sixteen of the 24 bench points came from newcomer Jason Edwards. He led all scorers on Sunday. North Texas senior starting point guard Rubin Jones had the second-most points as he dropped in 13 points.
"We practice so hard that when it comes time to play in games we're very prepared," Edwards, a Dodge City CC transfer said. "I know I can play at this level and my teammates support me big time."
Also coming up big Sunday for the Mean Green was fellow newcomer John Buggs III.
Early in the second half with UNT only up three points, Buggs drained a 3-pointer then stole a Bearkats pass on the next possession and then proceeded to hit another 3-pointer to open up the lead. With the Super Pit rocking, UNT never looked back.
"We are a really talented team and very well coached," Buggs said. "When we get out there this is a very comfortable offense to play in."
Newcomers Robert Allen and CJ Noland also shined in the 10-point win. The two transfers combined for 15 points and 17 rebounds. Allen and Noland were Sunday's top two rebounders. Allen grabbed nine boards as Noland secured eight.
Sunday was UNT's lone exhibition of the preseason. Its first regular season game will be Nov. 7 at the Super Pit versus Northern Iowa. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
