The UNT men's basketball team signed two incoming freshmen in the early signing period this week.
Â
Metroplex standout Tyran Mason and Arkansas All-State honoree Layne Taylor inked their names in green with North Texas and will join the team next season after graduating from their respective high schools.
Â
Mason, a 6-foot-6 senior at Plano High School, began garnering attention after last season's massive success. Mason has led Plano to its best run in over a decade as they've won back-to-back district championships and last year reached its first regional quarterfinal since 2007. After the season Mason was named the district's offensive player of the year.
Â
He averaged over 17 points per game in district including a 37-point performance against Plano West. Mason's literal growth as he shot up a couple inches over the last year combined with continued success at the Pro16 League circuit has led him to being ranked as a high 3-star recruit by 247Sports. He was named a top 20 recruit in all of Texas. He chose UNT over Middle Tennessee, UTA, Chattanooga and LA Tech.
Â
Taylor, a 5-foot-11 senior at Farmington High School near Fayetteville, Arkansas, is the son of a coach and has his name written all over the FHS record books. Taylor last year led his Cardinals team to a near perfect season (36-1) and a 4A Arkansas State Semifinal appearance. He was the conference player of the year, named to the Arkansas All State Tournament team ad was voted First Team Arkansas Democrat Gazette All-Arkansas Preps.
Â
Between his sophomore and junior, Taylor led his Farmington team to a combined 68-3 record.
Â
Taylor is a high 3-star recruit by 247Sports and No. 3 overall recruit from the state of Arkansas and top 20-point guard in the nation. He chose UNT over Chattanooga, Arkansas State, Little Rock and Saint Luis.
