The eight-game win streak ties the longest streak in program history
LAFAYETTE, La. – The UNT women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to blow past Louisiana 71-48 inside the Cajundome and tie the longest win streak in program history.
The Mean Green have won eight consecutive games since suffering their only defeat of the season on Nov. 12 at Texas A&M.
Leading 33-29 at halftime, North Texas took full control of the game by outscoring the Ragin' Cajuns 20-6 in the third quarter. Tommisha Lampkin led the way with six points in the quarter after having to sit for a majority of the first half with foul trouble.
With Lampkin picking up two fouls early in the first quarter, Jaylen Mallard stepped up and produced a season-high 10 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
Louisiana came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter, led by Tamia Robinson's three 3-pointers. The Ragin' Cajun defense also held UNT to 3-of-15 shooting in the quarter to build a 13-10 lead.
The Mean Green battled back to take the lead before halftime, bolstered by an 8-0 run that gave them their first lead of the game at 18-16. The teams would go back-and-forth with 10 consecutive shots being made, including six from North Texas and four from Louisiana. UNT would go on to shoot 75% in the quarter and take a four-point lead into the break.
As it has all season, UNT's defense stiffened up in the second half, while the offense got going. The Ragin' Cajuns were held to 22% shooting overall in the second half, while Robinson was held scoreless after her nine first-quarter points. On the offensive side of the ball, UNT shot 60% from the field, including an 8-of-10 mark in the third quarter. A 42-23 advantage in rebounding and 44 points in the paint also propelled North Texas to its 10th win of the season.
DesiRay Kernal led all scorers in the game with 18 points. The reigning AAC Player of the Week also added six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a complete performance. Behind Kernal, three other Mean Green would score in double figures including Jaaucklyn Moore with 13, Shamaryah Duncan with 10 and Mallard with 10.
North Texas will be back on the road Thursday night to wrap up its nonconference schedule at Montana State with tip off set for 7 p.m. CT.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On the second-half adjustments:
"I just thought we came out with a different focus. We made adjustments and of course (the players) have to lock into those, and they did that. I already thought in the second quarter we had started making some adjustments, but the defense really tightened up in the third quarter."
