DENTON, Texas – UNT Athletics recorded its eighth consecutive year with a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) above 82 or better with an 83 for the 2016-17 cohort, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
"Our mission in UNT Athletics is Building Champions and Preparing Leaders and we remain focused on empowering our student-athletes to achieve academic excellence," Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley said. "Ensuring the success of our student-athletes in earning their degrees is a huge part of that. We are also grateful to the dedicated coaches and support staffs that play a crucial role in guiding these exceptional young people toward success in both the classroom and competition."
Three UNT programs posted perfect GSR scores of 100 (men's basketball, women's tennis and women's volleyball). It was the eighth straight year for tennis and the third consecutive for volleyball.
Ten of North Texas' 12 sports scored higher than 83, while eight teams improved or matched their score from a year ago. Men's basketball (100) and women's basketball (95) each set new program records, while football (83) matched its program high from 2014-15 and 2012-13.
From the time GSR data collection began with the 1995-98 cohort, UNT has improved from a score of 59 to 82 (23-point increase).
The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the academic success of Division I student-athletes by better accounting for the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. The NCAA also released the most recent federal graduation rate data in conjunction with the GSR information. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, whereas the federal graduation rate does not. The GSR also accounts for mid-year enrollees. The NCAA calculates the federal graduation rate for student-athletes because it is the only rate by which to compare student-athletes to the general student body.
