Shamaryah Duncan and DesiRay Kernal score 19 each to lead UNT to win
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team secured the best start through 10 games in program history with a dominating 84-50 win over Alcorn State on Saturday inside The Super Pit.
The victory moved North Texas to 9-1 on the season in Jason Burton's first year as head coach. It also extended the team's win streak to seven games, marking the longest run since the 2000-01 team started with eight straight wins to open the season.
Making her second start of the season, Dyani Robinson provided an instant spark to the UNT offense that had struggled to get going early in its past two games. Robinson dished out five assists in the first half, while each of the Mean Green starters scored in the first quarter.
Shamaryah Duncan and DesiRay Kernal led the way for the Mean Green with 19 points each. For Duncan, it was a career high that surpassed her previous mark of 18 points from her time at Wichita State. Kernal added 10 rebounds to earn her fifth double double of the season and her second in-a-row.
A 58% mark from the field in the first half guided North Texas to a 20-point halftime lead over the Lady Braves.
Coming out of the half, Alcorn State went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 13. Shadasia Brackens ended that run when she entered the game and turned a steal into points for the second game in-a-row. Shortly after, Tommisha Lampkin would end a drought of nearly five minutes without a field goal for the Mean Green.
North Texas would go on a 10-0 run of its own to end the third quarter leading 61-39. UNT would close it out in the fourth quarter with a 17-2 run to go up 36 points, which was its largest lead of the game.
The Mean Green hit a season-high eight 3-pointers in the win, led by Duncan going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Shooting 8-of-15 from 3-point range, UNT also set a season-high percentage from deep at 53%.
Following Duncan and Kernal, Lampkin added 15 points and seven other Mean Green players recorded points in the win.
UNT will hit the road to start a four-game road trip beginning with Louisiana on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. CT.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On the 9-1 start to the season:
"Our nonconference schedule was to prepare us for the American Conference. Games like today, we set some game goals that we wanted achieve to make sure we are playing the way we are capable of playing. Although we won and we won big, the team is not satisfied. That's what I love about this team right now is they are expecting to win. We're definitely going to celebrate this one because 9-1 has never happened here and a seven-game win streak is hard to do."
