Lady Techsters use 17-0 third quarter run to take home the win
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 16, 2023) – Sophomore Aniyah Johnson produced her second career double-double, but LA Tech used a 17-0 run in the third quarter to pull away and eventually UNT 57-44 Thursday night at the Super Pit.
Johnson set a new career-high with 11 rebounds and scored 13 points as the Mean Green dropped to 9-16 overall and 6-9 in C-USA play. The Lady Techsters, meanwhile, improved to 15-10 and 8-7 in conference action.
Quincy Noble also scored in double figures with a team-high 14 points while also pulling down six boards. It is the 22nd time this season Noble has scored at least 10 points.
Leading 12-10 early in the contest, LA Tech closed the first quarter with four straight points to take a six-point lead into the second.
The Lady Techsters then swelled the lead to as many as 11 in the first half with a 7-0 run over less than two minutes of gametime and took a 26-18 lead into the break.
After a Noble jumper opened the second half and cut the deficit to six, LA Tech blew the contest open with 17 consecutive points to take a 43-20 lead, their largest of the game.
The Mean Green outscored LA Tech 18-10 in the fourth, but it was not enough as they dropped their third straight game.
As a team, UNT held the Lady Techsters to 37.3 percent from the floor but shot just 33.9 percent on the offensive side of the ball and did not make a 3-pointer in the contest.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"I thought we did enough on the defensive side of the ball to get a win, but we weren't nearly good enough offensively. The offensive isn't connecting. We'd get great looks, great shot opportunities, but we're not finishing at the rate we need to to win. I think sometimes we panic and start taking shots we don't need to take. We just lack confidence and get in our heads sometimes about the shots we are taking"

UNT has a quick turnaround as they return to the Super Pit Saturday to take on UTEP at 7:00 p.m. The Mean Green defeated the Miners 74-71 earlier this season.
