UNT sweeps season series with UTEP for first time in program history
DENTON, Texas (Feb. 18, 2023) – Junior Tommisha Lampkin had a career night with 29 points and 18 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season to lead UNT to a 67-65 win over UTEP Saturday night inside the Super Pit.
It is the first season sweep for the Mean Green of the Miners in program history as the Mean Green earned their 10th overall win and improve to 7-9 in C-USA play.
Along with Lampkin, who had career-highs in both points and rebounds, UNT also got 20 points from Quincy Noble and a strong defensive effort down the stretch from Jordyn Carter to earn the win.
The Mean Green have won four straight games that have been decided by three points or less and are now tied for sixth in the C-USA standings with Charlotte and FIU.
The 18 rebounds for Lampkin are the most for any UNT player since Madi Townley had 21 boards on Jan. 1, 2021, against UAB and the most in a home game since Anisha George had 28 on Nov. 7, 2019, versus Mid-America Christian.
The game was a back-and-forth affair early as neither team led by more than five points in the first quarter.
Trailing 23-21, UTEP was the first to pull away as the Miners went on a 12-2 run over a three-minute span in the second quarter to take a 33-25 lead, tied for their largest of the contest.
The Mean Green clawed back with four quick points of their own and trailed 35-31 heading into the break.
After UNT cut the deficit to one to open the second half on an and-one from Lampkin, UTEP swelled the lead back up to eight with a quick 7-0 run leading 42-34 with 4:29 left in the third.
Over the final 3:55 of the third, the Mean Green battled all the way back as they hit six of their final eight shots of the quarter to tie the contest at 49 heading to the fourth.
In the run, UNT got six points from Noble, five by Lampkin and four from Carter to tie the contest for the first time since the 7:09 mark of the second quarter.
The Mean Green grabbed the lead back for the first time early in the fourth on another three-point play, hitting the free throw to take a 54-53 lead with 7:22 left to play.
With the score 58-56 in favor of UNT, the Miners took advantage of the free throw line as they scored four straight from the charity stripe as a part of a string of six straight points to take a 62-58 lead with 3:32 remaining.
Lampkin made sure the game did not get away, however, with four straight points of her own to tie the game back up at 62. Two possessions later, Breanna Davis tied the game again with a layup to make the score 64-64.
After a free throw gave UTEP a one-point advantage, Carter was able to knife through the lane and knock down a basket to give UNT a 66-65 edge with 1:11 on the clock.
With three seconds left and a chance for the Miners to take the lead, Carter came up big again, this time on the defensive side of the block as she blocked a Jazion Jackson shot to clinch the win.
UNT outrebounded UTEP 40-33 in the contest and held a 16-14 edge in second chance points.
In the second half alone, Lampkin had 19 points and 10 rebounds to join Aniyah Johnson as one of two players to have a double-double in a single half this season.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"That was a lot of fun. It was definitely an exciting game. I thought both teams played hard from start to finish. It was anybody's game and I'm glad it was ours. What a huge game from Tommisha Lampkin. Not just regular post entry feeds but on the glass and making free throws and we needed every single one of them. I'm so proud of her and I'm so proud of our team. I'm proud of our fight and how we hung in there. To come back from every moment when they made a big shot, I just thought they were excellent. I'm just really proud of our team."
