DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team set the program record for regular season wins on Thursday with a 64-50 home victory over Middle Tennessee.
The Mean Green captured their 24th win of the year behind 19 points each from Abou Ousmane and Tylor Perry. The 24 regular season win mark surpasses last season's regular season total of 23.
"It means a lot," Perry said about setting the record. "A lot of great teams and players have come through here, many of them we've gotten to know, and to keep elevating this program is important and special."
North Texas (24-6, 15-4) fell behind early Thursday to the Blue Raiders (18-12, 11-8). Turnovers by UNT and Middle Tennessee 3-pointers allowed them to jump out to a 17-9 advantage. But constant paint touches by the UNT guards and passes in the paint to Ousmane got the Mean Green back within striking distance.
That strike came with 1:08 left in the first half when Perry sank a 3-pointer to give his team its first lead of the game. Furthermore, it gave them a lead they'd never relinquish.
In the second half, North Texas outscored the Blue Raiders by 11 and grew its lead to as much as 16. The Mean Green shot 16 second half free throws, which alone was more than twice as many as Middle Tennessee attempted for the whole game.
UNT finished Thursday 25-of-30 at the free throw line. It's the most attempts and makes they've had in a game this season. Perry was a career-high 14-of-14 at the line.
Ousmane was all over the floor Thursday. In addition to his 19 points, Ousmane grabbed nine rebounds and had a career-high five blocks.
"I thought our second half defense tonight was tremendous," said head coach Grant McCasland of his team who allowed just one second half 3-pointer after giving up six in the first half. "We played without fouling and we converted at the line. We were able to solidify this game at the free throw line, which we haven't done a lot of. That's what I'm excited about."
UNT closes out the regular season on Saturday with a home game versus Western Kentucky at 2 p.m. CT. The Mean Green, who have locked up the No. 2 seed at next week's conference tournament, can tie the program record for overall wins on Saturday with a victory over the Hilltoppers. Saturday's game will be broadcast on Stadium and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
