DALLAS - After tying for seventh place and tying the recently broken program record for low 54-hole score, UNT junior Ellie Roth was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, presented by Blenders Eyewear, the league announced on Wednesday.Â
The nod for Roth marks 10th conference weekly award for the program in the last 11 weeks the team has played, dating back to last season. It's the first of Roth's career and she is now the fifth member of the current roster to have at least one C-USA Golfer of the Week nod.
Roth's T7 finish led her team to tie for sixth place at the MountainView Collegiate, which boasted a field loaded with 11 top-50 teams, including No. 44 UNT, and 12 top-100 individuals. She shot a 71-66-70 to finish at 9-under for the event to tie the previous program mark that was broken by Audrey Tan last month. Her second-round 66 was also a career-best round and one off the program record. She tied for fourth in Par 5 scoring (-6) and brought her season stroke average down to 71.80, which is good for second on the team. Her T7 finish was a season best and it's her second straight top-15 showing.
"I am very happy to see Ellie honored by C-USA today," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "She has certainly fought hard through adversity over the past year. Her fall didn't go as planned due to injury but she has embraced the exercises our physical trainer has given her, and I have seen her committed to her routine. Her physical condition and her mental game has led her to reach new heights on the golf course. This honor also shows how deep our team is."
The Mean Green will return to action April 1-2, when they host The Bruzzy at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Oklahoma.Â
Fans can follow the program throughout the season on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and can check MeanGreenSports.com for tournament recaps and more.
