LAS VEGAS – The UNT men's basketball team faces UAB in the championship game of the 2023 National Invitation Tournament on Thursday at 8:40 p.m. CT from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, the Mean Green Sports Network and Westwood One.
Thursday will be the fourth meeting this season between the Mean Green (30-7) and Blazers (29-9) who both play in Conference USA. UNT swept UAB in the regular season but was upset by the Blazers in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
In the semifinal round on Tuesday, UNT made a 14-point comeback and defeated Wisconsin 56-54. The Mean Green held the Badgers scoreless for the game's final nine minutes and seven seconds.
Senior Tylor Perry led all players in scoring on Tuesday with 16. He's scored 83 points over the four games in the tournament, which is tied for the most in the 32-team tournament. He's knocked down 16 total 3-pointer in the tournament, which also leads the NIT. Perry's teammate Rubin Jones has made the second-most 3-pointers in the tournament with nine.
A win Thursday for North Texas would be its second NCAA postseason championship under sixth-year head coach Grant McCasland. They won the 2018 CBI title in his first season in Denton. The Mean Green have never won a NIT championship and had not won a NCAA postseason title prior to McCasland's arrival. A win would also be McCasland's 135th at UNT, which would move him into sole possession of third place on the program's all-time coaching wins list.
