Mean Green win doubles point, but fall in four singles contests
DENTON, Texas (April 12, 2023) – After a pair of thrilling wins in doubles play to take home the doubles point, UNT was unable to grab a singles win as they fell 4-1 against UT Arlington Wednesday afternoon in the regular season home finale at Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green got wins at lines one and three doubles to win the doubles point and go ahead 1-0 in the match, but fell at lines one, three, five and six to drop to 10-10 overall and fall at home for just the second time this season.
Jasmine Adams, who returned to action for the first time since Feb. 26, teamed up with Matilde Morais to open the day with a 6-4 victory at line one doubles. The duo of Adams and Morais is now 9-2 in doubles play this season with every match coming at line one.
Playing at line three, Olivia Halvorsen and senior Kexuan Zhou picked up a thrilling 7-6 (8-6) victory to give UNT the doubles point.
Halvorsen and Zhou, who was honored prior to the match on Senior Day for playing in her final regular season home contest, found themselves trailing 6-5 in the contest and were able to rally from behind and win a thrilling tiebreaker.
In singles play, Morais dropped the opening set 6-2 at line two but rallied to win the second 6-1 and found herself on top 3-1 in the third before the match was called.
Nformi Stadfany was also unable to finished as she was tied 3-3 in the second set in her match at line four.
The loss puts the final record for UNT at home in the regular season at 8-2. The eight home wins are the most since the Mean Green also won eight contests at Waranch in the 2018-19 season.
