UNT looking to capture its first title since 2013
DENTON, Texas (April 19, 2023) – The Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton will be the home of the 2023 C-USA Tournament where UNT will be looking to make a run at its first conference title in 10 years in its final year in the league.
The Mean Green head into the tournament as the #6 seed and will take on #11 UTEP Thursday at 12:00 PM in the first round.
"Our goal this week is to play with joy and gratitude," head coach Sujay Lama said. "I am very proud of the resilience these ladies have shown and how hard they have worked to be ready to compete this week. The adversities we have faced and overcome have made us stronger and closer to each other. We cannot wait to compete and are very excited to play at home."
The winner of the UNT-UTEP matchup will advance to take on #3 Rice on Friday at 10:00 AM as each of the top five seeds in the tournament received a bye into the Quarterfinal.
The winner of that matchup would advance to the semifinal currently set for Saturday at 12:00 PM with the title contest occurring Sunday morning at 10:00 AM.
The Mean Green closed the regular season at 10-11 overall and posted an impressive 8-2 record at home during the season. UNT started the season winning seven of its first eight dual matches before being struck with a rash of injuries.
For five straight matches March 10-18, the Mean Green were forced to play just four players in the starting lineup and dropped all five contests.
Now fully healthy, UNT is looking to return to the form they had earlier in the season when they knocked off South Florida who currently sits as the No. 60 ranked team in the latest ITA Poll.
Matilde Morais has led the Mean Green all season, posting an impressive 11-3 record in singles play in her first year in Denton. Morais also has a team-high 14 doubles win with her and Jasmine Adams teaming up for a 9-3 record at line one doubles.
Senior Kexuan Zhou has also reached double-digits in wins this season, posting a 10-3 record in singles play. Zhou has been versatile all season, posting wins at lines two, three, four, five and six this season.
All UNT matches throughout the tournament will have live stats and streaming through Track Tennis.
The tournament will run Thursday through Sunday with the title match happening Sunday morning at Waranch. The winner of the C-USA Tournament will receive an auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament.
