UNT Women Headed To Raleigh Regional As 6-Seed

DENTON - The UNT women's golf team learned its NCAA Regional fate on Wednesday, when it was announced on the Golf Channel's NCAA Selection Show that the Mean Green will compete in the Raleigh Regional on May 8-10, at Lonnie Poole Golf Course, the home course of NC State. UNT enters the event as the sixth seed, which marks the best seed the Mean Green have ever received for the NCAA Regional.
The top five teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, Arizona, on May 19-24. Also, the top individual from non-advancing teams at each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship as individuals.
"It is always interesting to see where the NCAA will send various teams," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "We are excited to travel to North Carolina and play Regionals. The course looks like it will set up nicely for us. It has five par 5s and we have done very well on par 5s in recent years, as that is a point of emphasis for us. The greens are Bent grass and the fairways are Bermuda grass. This is exactly what Denton Country Club has and we actually played there this morning. Dornick Hills also has that combination of grass and we played very well there in early April at The Bruzzy."
The Mean Green, ranked No. 35 in the latest Golfstat poll and 26th in the latest WGCA Mizuno Coaches Poll, earned the 6-seed in the regional, and will be joined by top-seed and nationally-ranked No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 14 Florida State, No. 21 Florida, No. 26 Arizona, No. 38 TCU, No. 46 NC State, No. 50 Purdue, Nebraska, Campbell and Richmond.
This marks the fourth time in program history the Mean Green have made it to an NCAA Regional and it comes after the program's third consecutive Conference USA championship last week in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Last year, the Mean Green earned their second straight automatic bid and competed in the Albuquerque Regional a year after being selected to the Baton Rouge Regional, which was infamously canceled due to what was deemed unplayable conditions after rain hit the area. That led to the top six seeds automatically moving on to the NCAA Championship.
UNT has beaten countless highly ranked teams this season, including the Big 12 champions, Pac-12 champions and Big Ten champions, and Akers said the 6-seed is a reflection of the level of respect the program has earned in recent years.
"We will do our best to get on similar courses (to Lonnie Poole Golf Course) over the next week and prepare the best we can," Akers said. "We feel very honored to be the sixth seed, and the ladies certainly have earned respect across the country this year."
