Sinolungan Earns C-USA Weekly Honor

DALLAS - After finishing alone in second place and helping her team to its first tournament win of the year, UNT graduate student Patricia Sinolungan was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, presented by Blenders Eyewear, the league announced on Wednesday.Â
The nod for Sinolungan marks the 11th conference weekly award for the program in the last 12 weeks the team has played, dating back to last season. It's the third such nod of Sinolungan's career.
Sinolungan led the Mean Green to a win at The Bruzzy at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Oklahoma, with an even-par 72-69-69-210 in tough wind conditions.
She finished two shots behind the winner, who was the only golfer in the field to break par. She birdied four of seven holes down the stretch in the final round to lead her team to victory after their 8-shot, 36-hole lead had evaporated earlier in the day. She tied for second in Par-4 scoring (-1) and tied for third in total birdies with 10.
UNT, which entered the event ranked 42nd in the nation, beat five top-40 teams: No. 39 Tulsa, No. 32 Texas Tech, No. 17 UCF, No. 36 Houston and No. 35 TCU. There were also six top-100 players in the field, and Sinolungan beat them all.
"I am very happy that Patty is being recognized for her great finish at the Bruzzy," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "I witnessed her final five holes of the final round and it was one of the most impressive stretch of holes I have ever seen. She made an up and down behind 16 green that most tour players could not pull off. Patty didn't have her best ball striking day in that final round but she found a way to get the ball in the hole.
"I'm a believer that hard work pays off and I can attest that Patty works as hard as anyone. She is devoted to playing at the next level and I truly hope that happens."
The Mean Green, now ranked No. 35 nationally, will return to action April 13-15, when they aim for a third consecutive C-USA championship in their final year in the conference before making the move to The American on July 1. Â
