Mean Green snap six-match losing streak
DENTON, Texas (April 9, 2023) – Playing with a full lineup of players for the first time since Feb. 26, UNT picked up a 6-1 victory over UT-Rio Grande Valley Sunday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The win snapped a six-match losing streak for the Mean Green and improved their overall record to 10-9 with an 8-1 mark at home this season.
"I'm so proud of my teammates and coaches for fighting so hard through this," Nformi Stadfany said. "We've been through so much this year so far and for us to come through was really big for us today. For myself, to come from behind the way I had to today really helped my confidence, but I couldn't have done it without the help of my coaches and our staff helping me all day."
In doubles play, UNT took home three hard-fought victories as all three lines went the distance in their respective matches.
The combination of Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Nformi Stadfany picked up the first win for UNT, grabbing a 7-5 win at line two.
Moments later, Olivia Halvorsen, who was playing for the first time since Feb. 4, and Kexuan Zhou won a thrilling 7-6 match at line three by taking the tiebreak point 8-6.
Matilde Morais and Olivia Malm, who also returned to action for the first time since February, rounded out the doubles point sweep with a 7-5 come-from-behind win at line one to put UNT on top 1-0.
In singles play, Morais was the first to pick up a win with a strong 6-2, 6-3 win in straight sets at line one. She is now 11-2 overall in singles play this season with a pair of those victories coming at line one.
Alogo Piqueras gave UNT a 3-0 advantage with another straight sets win, grabbing a 6-1, 7-5 victory at line two. It was Alogo's first completed singles match since Jan. 28 as she improved to 5-2 in singles play this season.
The clincher came in a thriller at line six as Marina Adati went back-and-forth before grabbing a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) win to put UNT on top 4-1 and stop the six-match losing streak for the Mean Green.
UNT wasn't done there, however, as Stadfany came from behind after dropping the opening set to win 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at line five. Stadfany found herself in a hole in the third set trailing 5-3, but came all the way from behind and won a thrilling third set tiebreaker to put North Texas on top 5-1.
The final singles point for the Mean Green came at line three where Zhou picked up another three-set victory, winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5). Zhou is now 10-2 overall this season and has reached double-digit singles wins for the first time in her career.
