DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team will compete in the ESPN Events 2023 Shriners Children's Hospital Charleston Classic held at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina Nov. 16, 17 and 19.
In addition to North Texas, the eight-team field will include Dayton, LSU, Houston, St. John's, Towson, Utah and Wake Forest. Matchups, times and ESPN platform designations will be announced at a later date.
The UNT men's basketball program is coming off its most successful season in its history. The Mean Green won a program-record 31 games last season to go along with tying the program-record for conference wins (16). UNT earned a bid into the 2023 National Invitation Tournament where they defeated Alcorn State, Sam Houston, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and UAB in route to its first NIT championship in program history.
The Mean Green, who have now won a championship trophy in each of the last four seasons, elevated associated head coach Ross Hodge to head coach on April 2 and will make the move to the American Athletic Conference next season.
UNT joins a loaded 2023 Shriners Children's Hospital Charleston Classic field where seven of the eight teams are coming off winning records. Houston won 33 games last season and earned the No. 1 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. St. John's is now under the leadership of hall of fame head coach Rick Pitino who enters the season with a 834-293 all-time record and is the first coach to take three different schools to the NCAA Final Four and the first to win an NCAA Championship at two different universities (Kentucky and Louisville).
Six of the eight head coaches in this year's Charleston Classic field rank in the top 40 among winningest head coaches all-time. St. John's, Towson and Wake Forest are the only teams in the field the Mean Green have never faced in their history.
Tickets to the Charleston Classic will be available for purchase following the announcement of the complete tournament schedule later this summer. In the meantime, fans can secure first access to the best seats and all-tournament tickets by signing up for the pre-sale at www.charlestonclassic.com.
