Women’s Basketball Inks Morehead State Transfer Sophie Benharouga

Transfer from France becomes fourth transfer to sign with UNT
DENTON, Texas (May 8, 2023) – UNT women's basketball has announced another strong addition to its 2023-24 roster as Morehead State transfer Sophie Benharouga becomes the fourth transfer to sign with the Mean Green, head coach Jason Burton announced Monday.
Benharouga comes to UNT after playing in 31 games with the Eagles, making 16 starts and averaging 8.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 2022-23.
Last season, Benharouga notched a pair of double-doubles on the year and reached double figures in scoring 13 times, highlighted by an impressive 19-point, 13-rebound performance in a road contest at Eastern Illinois.
Originally from Grenoble, France, Benharouga performed at a high level in big games last season, including scoring 18 points and pulling down six boards to lead the Eagles to a win in the first round of OVC Tournament over UT Martin.
Per HerHoopStats, Benharouga ranked in the 90th percentile of all DI players last season with a 26.2% usage rate, a metric that tracks a percentage of the plays during their time on the floor that a player used by either shooting or getting to the line.
Benharouga spent her first two seasons in Connecticut at Hartford University, missing the 2020-21 season due to injury before playing in 18 games in her second year. Also a standout in the classroom, she landed on the America East Honor Roll in 2021-22 with the Hawks.
She joins Texas A&M-Commerce transfers Dyani Robinson and DesiRay Kernal, Wichita State transfer Shamaryah Duncan and Fairfield High School signee Shadasia Brackens as members of the 2023 signing class for the Mean Green.
