CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The UNT women's golf team had five players named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar list, it was announced on Thursday.
Graduate Audrey Tan, senior Emilie Ricaud, junior Shreya Pal, sophomore Sakura Sugiyama and freshman Mason Lewis were all named to the prestigious list, which has some of the most stringent criteria for selection in all of college athletics with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and a participation threshold of more than half of the team's tournaments from the past season. The five honorees ties the program record for most in a year.
"I am very proud to have five student-athletes selected as WGCA Academic All-Americans today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "We certainly place an emphasis on academics in our program. Most of our players want to play professionally, but at the end of the day you have to a degree and earn high marks as a golf career can end in the blink of an eye with an injury.
"We do our best to prepare our student/athletes for life. They do a great job of time management. There is little doubt our team has made sacrifices in order to achieve greatness in the classroom and on the golf course."
The team finished off a Three-peat as Conference USA champions this year before advancing to the NCAA Regional in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Mean Green finished the year ranked No. 41 in the final Golfstat national poll.
Tan was named first-team All-Conference USA for the third straight season and became the first in program history to earn conference Golfer of the Year honors. Ricaud was a second-team selection, and Pal earned third-team honors.
